Scam of the Week: Spoiler Alert! This Job Isn't Real
In this week’s scam, cybercriminals are targeting marketing professionals with a job opportunity that seems too good to be true. You receive an email that appears to be from Netflix’s HR department offering you a high-level marketing position. If you reply to this email, you will soon receive a second email that is sent from the “Netflix HR team.” This email contains a link for you to click so that you can schedule a job interview.
If you click the link, you’ll be taken to what appears to be a Netflix careers page and asked to create a “Career Profile.” You’ll be given the option to log in with your Facebook account to create the profile. However, this job opportunity isn’t real, and the emails you received were actually sent by cybercriminals. If you enter your Facebook login information, cybercriminals will steal it instantly and take control of your account!
Follow these tips to avoid falling for this phishing scam:
-
Before clicking a link, hover your mouse over it and carefully check the website's URL. Scammers often use addresses with small errors, like a missing letter or misspelling.
-
Think carefully about why a site is asking for your login information. A real organization like Netflix will not require you to log in to your personal Facebook account to schedule a job interview.
-
Be cautious of job offers that you didn’t apply for. If an opportunity seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Stop, Look, and Think. Don't be fooled.
