Small Business Spotlight: Jacobson's Gun Center
For more than four decades, Jacobson’s Gun Center has been a staple in Story City - serving the community as a trusted, full-service retail gun shop offering both firearms and expert gunsmithing services.
Owned and operated by Paul and Karen Jacobson, the business first opened its doors in November of 1979. What began as a passion-driven venture has grown into a well-established local business known for its extensive selection and commitment to customer service. As a veteran-owned and operated business, Jacobson’s Gun Center reflects a strong foundation of dedication, discipline, and community values.
Paul’s interest in firearms began at a young age, growing up on a farm right outside Story City. At the age of 10, he had already started to develop a deep appreciation for guns - an interest that would eventually shape his career. Opening Jacobson’s Gun Center in his hometown was a full-circle moment, allowing him to bring his passion back to the community that helped shape it.
Over the years, the business has expanded to meet changing market demands, offering a wide range of firearms and services to customers throughout the country using internet services. Their continued growth is a testament to both their expertise and the relationships they’ve built within the community.
A key part of that journey has been their long-standing partnership with Reliance State Bank, which dates back to 1985. Throughout the years, RSB has supported Jacobson’s Gun Center in a variety of ways - from assisting with a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan to providing critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic through the Paycheck Protection Program to playing a role in financing the expansion to a larger building across the street, as well as providing ongoing support through inventory financing.
Today, Jacobson’s Gun Center stands as a proud example of a locally owned business that has grown through passion, perseverance, and strong community partnerships. Their story highlights not only the importance of small businesses in rural communities, but also the impact of trusted financial partners in helping those businesses thrive.
