Small Business Spotlight: Red Granite Farm

Nestled in rural Boone County, Red Granite Farm is just a short drive from Story City, Boone, and North Ames. This vibrant family-run operation spans over 5 acres of vegetables and pumpkins, houses 800 laying hens during the summer, and offers more than 300 varieties of hardy perennials, vines, shrubs, annuals, and succulents in its garden center.

Owners Steve and Nicole Jonas, both Iowa State University horticulture grads with deep farming roots, started the farm in 2007 with a dream of raising their children in a farm setting. What began as a small venture has grown steadily into a thriving business and a cherished family lifestyle.

The farm’s name was inspired by a striking glacial erratic—a large red granite rock—that sits prominently at the entrance and has watched over generations of farmers on this land. Over time, Red Granite Farm has flourished, driven by a passion for growing quality food and connecting with the community.

Nicole also brings her love for ornamental horticulture to life through landscape consultation services and a full-service garden center. She and Steve say the best part of their work is the people: “Our customers see the hard work we put in, and their loyalty means everything. When they value the food we grow, it makes all the effort worth it.”

Red Granite Farm has partnered with Reliance State Bank for several years, drawn to its small-town charm and friendly service. The Jonas family appreciates the convenient drive-up hours and tailored banking solutions that fit the needs of a growing local business.
